Students of fine arts faculty of Dhaka University have portrayed 2D drawings and paintings creating 3D models in a group art exhibition under way at the faculty’s Zainul Gallery.

The conceptual painting exhibition titled 2D to 3D Painting was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Ten MFA students of the drawing and painting department have displayed their works in the exhibition.

Students created the artworks after participating in a yearlong online course titled Conceptual Painting. They were taught by professor Azyz Sharafy, who teaches studio/electronic arts and graphic designing at Washburn University, USA. The course was held amid the Covid-19 crisis.

‘Teaching this course online was a challenging journey. We had to deal with many technical difficulties. Teaching conceptual painting online to students of the FFA, DU has been a positive experience,’ said Azyz Sharafy.

Sharafy, also a former student of the FFA continues, ‘The students started with materialising their concepts into simple 2D layout drawings. Then they went through learning conceptual art, visual design, compositional and aesthetical concepts development to finalise their 2D works. The final project was to complete 3D painting and relate it to their conceptual artworks.’

Professor Nisar Hossain, dean of the FFA said, ‘Many alumni of this faculty are teaching and researching in prestigious foreign art institutions across the world. Azyz Sharafy has been teaching electronic arts and digital graphics in the USA for over two decades. It is important to incorporate technological advances into art. The students have learnt a lot about modern-day techniques of creating art and how to present them by participating in the online course.’

Students, namely Md Akib Mahmud, Dresti Dhar, Md Fahim Islam, Helal Hosen, Moriom Akter Meera, Subir Kumar Bhowmik, Tamera Khan, Uzma Ifreet Opshee, Ahsana Nasreen Hoque Angona and Anirban Howlader have displayed their artworks in the exhibition.

Helal Hosen’s artwork titled Manifestation is based on a shrimp.

‘The artwork is predominantly created with red, orange and black colours in an attempt to represent the flavour and colours of prawns,’ he said.

Dresti Dhar’s artwork titled Three Dimensional Narrative shows eggs, money plant, colour palette and paint brushes.

‘I used yellow, orange, green, brown and white colours to highlight my subject matters. I have created a 3D representation of my themes,’ she said.

Anirban Howlader’s artwork titled Floating Guava Market depicts the historic floating guava market of Jhalokathi and climate change issues.

‘My ancestral district is Jhalokathi, which is in the southern part of Bangladesh. Due to its proximity to the sea, it will be in danger if global warming causes sea level to rise. I have used cardboard, plastic, clay, acrylic colour and a sinking boat to depict climate change,’ he said.

Tamera Khan’s artwork titled Melancholia represents three inseparable elements of Dhaka city — buildings, wires and rickshaws.

‘I grew up in a gulf country. When I shifted to Dhaka in 2015, everything appeared to be arbitrary and haphazard. My artwork depicts the urban Dhaka where disorder is the ultimate truth,’ she said.

The exhibition will end on July 26.
