Mainer Tony DiPietro doesn’t build your typical, basic birdhouse.

“The thing that makes them so cool is you never know what I'm going to do," DiPietro told WMTW.

DiPietro even noted he doesn’t even know himself some days. It’s just one of the reasons why, after 20 years, he still loves heading out to his backyard Falmouth workshop and adding a few more to his already long list of birdhouses from Maine that have been sold around the country.

“I know I've built thousands,” DiPietro said.

He uses a collection of materials that he’s salvaged from numerous places, recycling them into some sort of adornment for the houses.

He thinks of it as his signature, whether it is a piece of metal, a tool, or a paint brush – even a vintage bicycle seat has made it onto a house.

DiPietro gives each bird house a clever little sign as well.

“They almost seem like they're naked without a sign on them. Sometimes to me, if it doesn't have an implement or a sign, it seems like it's missing something,” DiPietro said.

While he said he’s never quite sure what the next design might feature, he can promise it’s the only one he’ll make as no two are alike.

If there is a particular birdhouse that catches your eye, you’d better grab it quickly. “I like to just be creative and just hopefully that you'll like what I make,” DiPietro said.
