The Lego Group recently revealed its three-dimensional set that pays tribute to Vincent van Gogh’s famous oil-on-canvas painting ‘The Starry Night’ that will be available to customer from June.

Through the Lego Ideas platform, Truman Cheng, a 25-year-old Hong Kong based Lego fan, submitted an idea of crating the artwork but in Lego form, and it passed after he receiver over 10,000 votes.

With colourful bricks and a minifigure of van Gogh making the iconic work of art, that mimic van Gogh’s brush strokes, the set re-creates the 1889 painting which now hangs in New York City at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Van Gogh’s widely hailed painting – that features a night sky with blue swirls – was created during his 12-month stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy, France, and was inspired by the view outside his window.

According Cheng, who is also a PhD student, the original concept came when he was playing with LEGO bricks and realised that the random interval with which he stacked them looked like van Gogh’s famous brush strokes.

“It was a good brain tease to come up with tricks and techniques to capture the look of the original painting.” Cheng said. “The brushwork goes into many directions in the moon and the swirling cloud, so there was some creative use of bracket and clip elements involved.”

The Starry Night inspired set consists of 2,316 pieces and comes with a Lego minifigure of van Gogh himself, a paint brush and miniature version of the famous painting.

Lego’s final version of the reimagined iconic painting provides a framed blue-and-yellow piece expected to stand  eight cm long and 21 cm wide.

Customers will be able to buy the set from 1 July 2022 for R2,693.96 ($169.99), while VIP Early Access will be available from 25 May on Lego.com.
