Local artist paints massive mural on Tulsa Welding School’s campus

TULSA, Okla. — A local artist is creating a massive, 722 square-foot mural on Tulsa Welding School’s campus on Route 66.

The mural features historic Route 66 landmarks and other popular landmarks in Tulsa. It was organized by Muros, an art activation agency. Sarah Thompson is the artist painting the mural.

“To me, it’s spotlighting how Tulsa is thriving. Tulsa Welding School is part of the historic Route 66, and it’s beautifying that and making it known,” said Thompson.

Thompson uses a combination of tools, including spray paint and traditional paint brushes. She says the paint can last for five or more years. Thompson will use around 50 cans of paint to finish the project, which is expected to be completed next week.

Dr. Shalisa Powell is the Campus President of the Tulsa Welding School. She spoke about the importance of the mural.

“We hope that our students are inspired by the mural, that it represents welders, represents the skilled trade industries and people who build the infrastructure of the country, so these are important work for us and we just wanted to honor them in this way.”
