Note: The Dublin St. Patrick's Day Parade and pancake breakfast have been canceled because of predicted bad weather.

St. Patrick's Day isn't officially until March 17, but fans can get a head start on celebrating in the week leading up to the holiday.

On March 11, the members of the Shamrock Club, who put on the parade in Downtown Columbus on March 17, will get together in Columbus City Hall with Mayor Andrew J.  Ginther and the City Council for “Proclamation Day.”

After the mayor and council have proclaimed a week of celebration for the event, Shamrock Club members head out with paint and brushes.

“I don't know if you've ever been Downtown at noon the week before St. Patrick's Day, but traffic gets kind of snarled up. It's us painting shamrocks on the corner of Broad and High,” said Andrew Shuman, president of the Shamrock Club.

The March 17 parade is part of a full day of activities, beginning with Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 280 N. Grant Ave.

The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Broad Street and Washington Boulevard, traveling east on Broad Street and then north on High Street to the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Spectators can expect to see marching and pipe bands, dance troupes and floats.

At the Convention Center, guests can take part in the Irish Family Reunion, where tables can be reserved in advance or tickets bought at the door ($11 for ages 12 and older, and $5 for kids 5 to 12).

“It's a big gathering,” Shuman said. “Everybody buys tables, the families come out, they set up their own decorations, and we'll have two bands and some dancers. The hall that we're in is really nice. They do lights overhead, green, white and orange, for the Irish flag.”

In the evening, the party moves to the Shamrock Club, 60 W. Castle Road, where Fialla will be playing.

“The whole day is so different than the commercialized Dr. Seuss hats and green beer,” Shuman said. “We take a lot of pride in that. We try to promote a different atmosphere. It's about family and it's about heritage.”
